Overview:
To perform sampling, testing, and analysis of drilling fluids (mud) to ensure properties meet operational and client requirements. To monitor mud systems, report deviations, and recommend corrective actions. To maintain accurate records of mud properties and chemical usage, ensuring compliance with company QHSE policies and industry standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Responsibilities:
Monitor usage of drilling fluid chemicals and additives to avoid wastage.
Report discrepancies in chemical inventory and ensure accurate tracking of consumption.
Assist in planning chemical requirements for upcoming operations to reduce unnecessary costs.
Maintain mud testing equipment in good condition to avoid repair/replacement expenses.
QHSE Responsibilities:
Ensure safe handling, storage, and labeling of all chemicals used in mud preparation and testing.
Use appropriate PPE when conducting mud tests or handling additives.
Participate in safety drills and toolbox talks, especially those related to chemical spills or exposure.
Immediately report unsafe conditions, spills, or contamination incidents to the Mud Engineer and Driller.
Support implementation of MS requirements daily and encourage crew members to follow safe practices.
Operational:
Conduct routine mud checks (density, viscosity, pH, fluid loss, sand content, solids analysis, etc.) at specified intervals.
Record and report test results accurately to the Mud Engineer and Driller.
Assist in mixing mud and additives as directed, ensuring correct proportions and procedures.
Monitor mud tanks, shakers, and pumps to ensure proper circulation and fluid properties.
Support well control operations by ensuring mud properties meet required specifications.
Maintain calibration of mud testing instruments and ensure availability of spare parts and consumables.
Assist in preparing mud reports for submission to client representatives.
Business Planning / Continuous Improvement / Organization Efficiency:
Keep mud testing area clean, organized, and ready for immediate use.
Suggest improvements in mud testing procedures or equipment usage to enhance efficiency.
Ensure all mud samples are properly labeled, stored, and disposed of according to company procedures.
Participate in planning meetings to anticipate mud requirements for upcoming drilling phases.
Support continuous improvement initiatives by documenting lessons learned from mud system performance.
People Management:
Work closely with derrickman and floor crew to ensure mud handling safety.
Provide guidance and informal training to junior crew members on mud testing procedures.
Communicate clearly with Mud Engineer and Driller regarding any deviations in mud properties.
Promote teamwork and discipline among crew members during mud mixing and testing operations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Proficient written and spoken English
Basic numeric literacy
Certificate in drilling fluids technology or equivalent training
Preferred: Higher education in chemistry, geology, or petroleum engineering
Knowledge of a second language
Skills & Knowledge
Knowledge of safety policies related to chemical handling, firefighting, and emergency response
Ability to use mud testing equipment (Marsh funnel, mud balance, retort kit, filter press, etc.)
EXPERIENCE :
Prior rig experience as a Roustabout or Derrickman with mud handling exposure
Understanding of drilling fluid properties and their impact on well control
Ability to perform standard mud tests and record results accurately
Strong safety awareness in handling chemicals
